Hedemora

This article is about the Swedish place Hedemora. For the municipality of the same name, see Hedemora (municipality), and for the breed of chicken, see Hedemora (chicken).

Hedemora is the capital of the Swedish municipality of Hedemora in the province of Dalarnas län and the historical province of Dalarna. In 2015, the village had 7371 inhabitants on an area of 582 hectares.

In the Middle Ages, the place where Hedemora is located today was called Henemora and was situated on a trade route from central Sweden to Kopparberget (today's Falun). For this reason, Hedemora was granted market privileges as early as 1446 and finally town rights in 1459. The town is thus the oldest in Dalarna.

Teaterladan in Hedemora is part of the European Route of Historic Theatres.

Hedemora is situated between lakes Brunnsjön and Hofran and about two kilometres from where Dalälven flows into the latter.
