History and origins

Before European settlement the coastal plain around modern Hawthorne was occupied for thousands of years by indigenous peoples of the Los Angeles basin. During the Spanish and Mexican periods the land was divided into ranchos; after U.S. statehood the area developed into farms and then suburban neighborhoods. Hawthorne was incorporated as a municipality in the early 20th century and grew with the expansion of Southern California.
