Haltern am See is a municipality in the district of Recklinghausen in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The town lies by the Lippe River and the Wesel‑Datteln Canal and is about 15 km north of Recklinghausen. Since December 2001 the official name has included "am See" to reflect the importance of the nearby Halterner Stausee (reservoir and recreational lake).
