Overview
Håkan Carlqvist (15 January 1954 – 7 July 2017) was a prominent Swedish professional motocross competitor. Born near Stockholm, Sweden, he rose to international prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s and is best known for winning the F.I.M. 250cc World Championship in 1979 and the 500cc World Championship in 1983. He raced for major factory teams during his career and remains a notable figure in the history of motocross.
Racing career and major titles
Carlqvist established himself on the world stage as a member of the Husqvarna factory racing team, taking the 250cc world title in 1979. Seeking new challenges, he moved to Yamaha in 1980 to contest the premier 500cc class. In that higher-displacement category he proved highly competitive: he finished third overall in both 1981 and 1982 and then claimed the 500cc world championship in 1983 after a season-long rivalry with leading Honda riders André Malherbe and Graham Noyce. An injury in 1984 curtailed his bid to defend the title, and he continued racing for Yamaha through the end of the 1986 season.
Racing style and machinery
Carlqvist raced at a time when motocross technology and rider fitness were both evolving rapidly. He competed on two of the era’s influential factory teams: Husqvarna, known for lightweight two-stroke machines that excelled in the smaller classes, and Yamaha, which provided competitive options in the powerful 500cc category. Riders moving from 250cc to 500cc faced substantially more power and heavier bikes, requiring adjustments in technique, strength and race strategy; Carlqvist’s success in both classes demonstrated adaptability and raw pace.
