Győző Kulcsár (18 October 1940 – 19 September 2018) was a noted Hungarian fencer born in Budapest. Over a competitive career that spanned the 1960s and 1970s he became one of Hungary's most successful épéeists, winning multiple Olympic medals and contributing to the national team's success at world championships. He died in 2018 at the age of 77.
Competitive career and Olympic record
Kulcsár represented Hungary at four consecutive Olympic Games: 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976. Across those appearances he collected a total of six Olympic medals, including four gold medals (three with the Hungarian team and one individual title) and two individual bronze medals. His Olympic success placed him among the leading épée fencers of his era and contributed to Hungary's reputation as a fencing power.
Major achievements
- Four Olympic gold medals and two individual Olympic bronzes (medals won between 1964 and 1976).
- Three world team titles with Hungary, secured in 1970, 1971 and 1978.
- Longstanding presence in international épée competition through the 1960s and 1970s.
Épée fencing and style
Épée is one of the three modern Olympic fencing weapons; unlike foil and sabre, épée allows hits with the point on any part of the opponent's body and does not use right-of-way rules. Successful épéeists typically combine precision, timing and tactical patience. Kulcsár's results reflect consistency, tactical intelligence and the strong Hungarian training systems of his generation.
Later life and legacy
After retiring from top-level competition, Kulcsár remained involved in the sport as a coach and mentor, helping to develop younger fencers and sharing his experience with subsequent generations. His achievements are frequently cited when discussing Hungary's historical strength in Olympic fencing and the development of épée tactics in the mid-20th century.
