Andiast was a small alpine municipality in the district Surselva of the canton Graubünden, in Switzerland. It is commonly described in administrative records as a former municipality. On 1 January 2018 Andiast and the neighbouring Waltensburg/Vuorz joined to form the larger municipality of Breil/Brigels; the merger was part of a wider regional effort to streamline local government.
Location and landscape
Set in the upper reaches of the Surselva valley, Andiast occupies an alpine setting characterized by steep slopes, meadows and forested areas typical of the region. The scenery reflects the high-Romanche and Swiss alpine environment of Surselva in Graubünden, with access to mountain trails and quiet rural roads connecting it to neighbouring villages.
Language and culture
The local culture is influenced by Romansh-speaking traditions; the Sursilvan variety of Romansh is widely used in everyday life alongside Swiss German. As part of the trilingual canton of Graubünden, Andiast shared cultural traits such as traditional alpine farming practices, seasonal festivals and vernacular building styles.
History and municipal change
Like many small mountain settlements in the Alps, Andiast developed around parish and agricultural life. Its administrative identity changed when municipal consolidation brought Andiast together with Waltensburg/Vuorz to create Breil/Brigels, a move intended to improve public services and long-term planning for the valley.
Economy, tourism and notable features
The local economy historically relied on mixed agriculture and pastoralism; today tourism and outdoor recreation also play a part, with opportunities for hiking, nature study and rural tourism. Visitors can experience traditional architecture, local cuisine and tranquil village streets. Practical information and current governance are now found under Breil/Brigels, reflecting the administrative merger that included Andiast.
