Landmarks and culture

The municipality hosts a number of cultural and historic sites. Among these are the Erasmus House, preserved churches such as the Collegiate Church of St. Peter and St. Guido, and municipal museums that document local history. Anderlecht is also widely known for its football club, R.S.C. Anderlecht, which plays at a major local stadium and has been one of Belgium's most successful teams.

Public life in Anderlecht includes local markets, community festivals and cultural programming organized by municipal institutions. The mix of long-standing artisan workshops and newer businesses gives the area both historic character and contemporary economic activity.

History and development

Historically a rural settlement outside medieval Brussels, Anderlecht expanded during industrialization and was gradually integrated into the urban region around the capital. Its growth reflects wider demographic and economic shifts in Brussels during the 19th and 20th centuries: suburbanization, the rise of industry, and later, service-sector development.

Today Anderlecht is well connected to the rest of Brussels by road and public transport and continues to balance heritage preservation with urban renewal projects and community services.
