Political career and offices

Braks held a range of parliamentary and cabinet posts across three decades, alternating between the House of Representatives, ministerial office and the Senate. His major roles included:

• Member of the House of Representatives: 1977–1980, 1981–1982, 1986 and 1989.
• Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries: 1980–1981 and 1982–1989, responsible for agricultural policy, fisheries and food-safety regulation.
• Minister of Education and Sciences: 1989 (brief appointment).
• Minister for Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries: 1989–1990.
• Member of the Senate: 11 June 1991 – 10 June 2003; parliamentary group leader 18 June 1999 – 2 October 2001; President of the Senate 2 October 2001 – 2003.

Responsibilities and notable events

In his capacity as minister for farming and fisheries, Braks was centrally involved in agricultural policy, price mechanisms, and food-safety oversight. A notable moment in his tenure was the arrival of radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, which required coordinated testing of milk and crops, temporary restrictions on certain products, and communication with farmers and consumers. His ministries were tasked with balancing public health concerns and economic impacts for the agricultural sector.

Senate leadership and parliamentary work

After leaving the cabinet, Braks continued to shape policy from the upper house. As parliamentary group leader and later as President of the Senate, he chaired debates, oversaw procedural matters, and represented the Senate in official functions. His long experience in both executive and legislative branches gave him a reputation for procedural knowledge and institutional continuity within the CDA caucus.

Legacy and death

Braks is remembered for his sustained involvement in Christian-democratic politics and for steering Dutch agricultural policy through difficult episodes in the 1980s. He remained a recognized figure in North Brabant after retirement. Braks died on 12 July 2017 in Sint-Michielsgestel, North Brabant, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 84.
