Early life and rise to power

Chiluba began his public career in the labour movement, where he was known as an effective organiser and spokesman for workers' concerns. He emerged as a leading figure in the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD), a coalition that campaigned for competitive elections and political liberalisation after decades of one-party government.
