Frank Spellman — American Olympic Weightlifter

Competitive career

Spellman competed during a period when Olympic weightlifting used a three‑lift format (the military press, the snatch and the clean and jerk). At the 1948 Summer Olympics he produced the performances that earned him the gold medal and, according to contemporary accounts, set or bettered Olympic standards in his class. His success reflected sustained excellence at national competitions and frequent appearances at major international meets of the late 1940s.
