Forward Kahuta (Urdu: تحصیل کہتا) is a small town and the administrative centre of Haveli District in Azad Kashmir. Formerly administered as part of Bagh District, the town became the seat of the newly organised Haveli District following recent administrative changes. It lies in the mountainous western end of Azad Kashmir and functions as a local hub for surrounding villages and hamlets.

Geography and setting

Forward Kahuta is situated in hilly terrain characterized by steep valleys and forested slopes. The settlement's approximate coordinates are 33°54′N 74°06′E. Elevation and local relief influence the climate, which tends to be cooler and wetter than the adjacent plains. The town's landscape supports subsistence farming, orchards, and pockets of alpine pastures higher up the valleys.

History and administration

The town's name and modern administrative role reflect changes in local governance. For many years the area was administered as part of the larger Bagh District until it was reorganised into Haveli District and Forward Kahuta designated as the district headquarters. Local government institutions, basic courts and district administrative offices are located here, serving the population of the immediate region.

Economy and transport

The local economy is predominantly rural and mixed: small-scale agriculture, livestock rearing, timber from managed forests and retail services for nearby communities. Transport links are limited by terrain; the town is reachable by regional roads connecting to other parts of Azad Kashmir and to transit routes toward the plains. Seasonal weather and landslides can affect accessibility.

Demography and culture

The population of Forward Kahuta is composed mainly of people from local ethnic and linguistic communities of Azad Kashmir. Social life is centred around village networks, markets and religious institutions. Traditional crafts, local foods and seasonal festivals reflect the cultural patterns of the mountain communities of the wider district.

Notable points and distinctions

  • Forward Kahuta should not be confused with other places named Kahuta elsewhere in Pakistan; its identity is tied to Haveli District in Azad Kashmir (Azad Kashmir).
  • Its role as district headquarters makes it important for administration and local services despite its small size.
  • Due to its terrain and elevation, the town is a gateway for trekking and access to rural mountain settlements for visitors and officials.

As an administrative and logistic centre in a mountainous zone, Forward Kahuta plays a modest but central role in serving surrounding rural communities and in connecting them to the wider region of Azad Kashmir.
