Flag of the Solomon Islands

Design and appearance

The flag is divided diagonally from the lower hoist (bottom-left) to the upper fly (top-right) by a narrow gold (yellow) stripe. The upper triangle is blue and contains five white five-pointed stars arranged near the hoist. The lower triangle is green. The diagonal stripe is relatively thin compared with the two triangular fields and creates a strong visual separation between the blue and green areas.

Symbolism

• Blue: commonly interpreted as the surrounding sea and the maritime environment that shapes life in the archipelago.
• Green: represents the land, vegetation, and agricultural resources of the islands.

History and adoption

The current flag was introduced in 1977 as the territory moved toward self-government and eventual independence in 1978. The choice of a simple, bold graphic with distinctive colors followed a broader post-colonial trend in the Pacific of adopting flags that reflect local geography and cultural identity rather than colonial motifs. Earlier proposals and alternative designs were considered during the transition period, but the diagonal composition with five stars became the accepted emblem.

Since adoption, the flag has been used in official capacities, on government vessels, and by Solomon Islanders abroad. It is also used informally during cultural events, sporting fixtures, and commemorations. Variants for naval or presidential use may include additional emblems, but the national flag remains the primary national symbol recognized domestically and internationally.
