Erschmatt — former municipality in the canton of Valais, Switzerland

Geography and environment

Erschmatt sits on steep slopes with alpine meadows, mixed woodland and stone‑built terraces. The local environment supports grazing livestock during the summer, small‑scale forestry and a network of footpaths that link summits, pastures and neighbouring villages. History and administrative change

Historically the place functioned as a rural parish and focal point for surrounding farms. Following discussions common in many Swiss cantons about municipal efficiency and service provision, the former municipality of Erschmatt merged into the municipality of Leuk on 1 January 2013. The merger transferred administrative responsibilities while the village continues to preserve local customs and community life.

The traditional economy was based on mixed agriculture, alpine pastoralism and small craft trades.
