Early life and training

Born in Rogers, Texas, Ailey grew up during segregation in the American South and later moved west, where he trained in Los Angeles with Lester Horton. Horton's technique and repertory provided Ailey with a foundation in strong, theatrical movement; he later relocated to New York and absorbed influences from other modern dance pioneers while developing his own voice.

In 1958 Ailey established a company that became nationally and internationally influential. Its repertory blended ballet, modern technique and vernacular movement. His signature work, Revelations, remains a staple of the concert stage for its vivid choreography set to spirituals, gospel and blues.
