The county lies in eastern Georgia and includes a mix of pine forests, agricultural land and lowland river areas. Its proximity to the Savannah River and the city of Savannah has influenced land use and development patterns, with a corridor of residential growth feeding commuter connections to larger employment centers.

History

Effingham County was created during the Revolutionary era and takes its name from Lord Effingham, a British noble remembered for his sympathy to colonial concerns. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the county contained plantations, small farms and river communities; in the late 20th and early 21st centuries it experienced suburban expansion as nearby Savannah grew.

Government, population and services

Local government is administered through elected county officials, including a board of commissioners, sheriff and other constitutional officers. The Effingham County School District manages public education across the county. Demographically, the county has seen steady population growth since 2010 driven by in-migration and residential development.

Economy and transportation

The local economy blends agriculture, light manufacturing, retail and services. Many residents commute to jobs in the Savannah area and at nearby industrial and port facilities.
