Durrës District (Albania): overview, history and significance

Former Albanian district centered on the port city of Durrës; an important coastal, historical and economic area now within Durrës County, noted for its port, beaches and ancient heritage.

Overview

The Durrës District was one of the thirty-six districts of Albania and historically served as a local administrative unit centered on the coastal city of Durrës. The area is part of modern Durrës County and contains the country's major western seaport and urban center. Population figures for the district have been reported at about 242,801 residents; the largest settlement and administrative centre is the city of Durrës, a long-established hub for trade and tourism. See the district entry: Durrës District.

Geography and population

The district occupies a stretch of Adriatic coastline and a short inland hinterland. Its shoreline features beaches and low-lying coastal plains that support tourism and agriculture. Urban areas concentrate around the port city and suburban municipalities. Administratively it lies within the broader area now called Durrës County.

History and cultural heritage

The city of Durrës has a long recorded history, founded in antiquity as a Greek colony (often known by the names Epidamnus or Dyrrhachium) and later significant under Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule. Remains such as a Roman amphitheatre and medieval walls reflect this layered past and contribute to the district's cultural importance.

Economy and importance

Economic life in the district revolves around the Port of Durrës, one of Albania's busiest maritime gateways, together with tourism, light industry and services. Beaches and historical sites attract domestic and international visitors, while the port supports freight, passenger ferries and regional commerce. The principal city is Durrës, which anchors the local economy.

Administrative changes and notable facts

Albania's administrative system has been reformed several times; the 36-district structure that included Durrës was superseded by a county-based system and later local-government reforms. Today references to the Durrës District are often historical or statistical, while governance operates through municipalities inside Durrës County. The area remains one of Albania's most densely populated and economically significant coastal zones.
