Dorog is a small town located in Komárom-Esztergom County, in northern Hungary. It lies roughly 38 km northwest of central Budapest and historically has served as a local market, industrial and transport hub. The town's German name is Drostdorf, reflecting the region's multiethnic past.

Overview and location

Dorog occupies a position close enough to the capital to be influenced by Budapest's economy while retaining a distinctly local character. Its setting places it within reach of the Danube bend and surrounding hills, which shape patterns of settlement, commerce and commuting. Modern Dorog functions both as a residential center for people working in nearby cities and as a service point for surrounding villages.

History and development

The town expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries with the arrival of industry and improved transport links. Mining and related heavy industry played an important role in the local economy, and remnants of that industrial era can still be seen in the townscape and in place names. Over time Dorog adapted by diversifying its economic base and by strengthening connections with regional centers.

Economy, culture and transport

Dorog's economy today combines light industry, commerce and services. It is served by road and rail routes that connect it to the wider Budapest metropolitan area and to other towns in the county, making commuting feasible. Cultural life includes local clubs, sports teams (including a well‑known local football club), community events, religious buildings and small museums or exhibitions that recall the town's industrial and social history.
