Danville, Kentucky

Danville is a city in central Kentucky and a regional center in the United States. It serves as a local seat of government and commerce and combines a compact downtown with surrounding residential and agricultural areas. Visitors encounter 19th-century buildings, tree-lined streets and a mix of civic institutions.

Founded shortly after American independence, Danville played a notable role in Kentucky's early political life. The town hosted the convention that produced the state's first constitution and retains museums and historic sites that interpret that era. It is sometimes called the "City of Firsts" because of several early civic and medical milestones.

Education and culture are prominent. Centre College, a private liberal arts college in Danville, has long been a center for regional academic life and civic events. In 2012 the college hosted the nationally televised vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan, an event that brought widespread attention to the city.

The town is also known for an important medical first: in the early 19th century a local physician performed one of the first documented successful abdominal surgeries, a milestone in American surgery that attracts historical interest to the site and nearby museums.
