History and origins

Crawford County was organized in the early 19th century as the state expanded westward. Its name honors Colonel William Crawford, a Revolutionary War figure who became a symbol in frontier-era commemoration. Before European-American settlement the area was inhabited and used seasonally by Indigenous peoples of the region.
