Alexander PS (step-entrance single-decker bus body)

Design and construction

Construction used traditional coachbuilding techniques of the era with a steel and/or aluminium structural frame and panelled exterior. Styling tended to be functional rather than showy: a large glazed windscreen, rectangular side windows and a destination display above the cab were common. Interior arrangements varied by operator, with options for different seating patterns, door configurations and optional features such as luggage racks or reinforced floors for heavier use.

Chassis compatibility

The PS was built on several widely used chassis, allowing operators to select the drivetrain and running gear to suit route types and maintenance fleets. Common chassis included:

Production tapered as industry trends moved toward low-floor designs in the 1990s, which improved accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility and gradually became standard specification across many markets.

Legacy and distinctions

Although no longer mainstream, the Alexander PS represents a transitional period in bus design between classic step-entrance bodies and the later low-floor era. Its adaptability to several chassis and straightforward, serviceable construction are qualities noted by fleet managers of the period. Surviving examples are of interest to preservation groups and historied fleets that document bus development in the late 20th century.
