Commonwealth MRT Station (EW20) is an elevated rapid transit station on Singapore’s East West Line. Commissioned on 12 March 1988, it forms part of the early phase of the Mass Rapid Transit network that extended rail services into residential districts west of the city centre.

Location and role

The station sits along Commonwealth Avenue in the Queenstown planning area and primarily serves nearby public housing estates, local shops and community amenities. It lies on the East West Line between Queenstown (EW19) to the east and Buona Vista (EW21) to the west, providing residents with a direct rail link toward the central business district and connections to other lines.

Commonwealth functions as a neighbourhood stop rather than a major interchange, with commuting peaks during school and office travel times. It also links to surface bus services and taxi stands that extend travel options within the district.

Design and facilities

Like many early elevated stations on the line, Commonwealth features an overhead concourse with sheltered platforms above the carriageway. The station has been upgraded over time to improve accessibility and commuter comfort, including lifts, barrier-free access and the retrofitting of platform screen doors for safety.
