Design and facilities

The station is built on an elevated guideway above the surrounding roads. History and development

Aljunied station opened on 4 November 1989 as part of the initial phases of expansion of Singapore's MRT network along the east–west axis. In earlier operational maps and signage the station was identified by the alphanumeric code "E4"; this coding was revised as the system expanded and standardized, resulting in the present code EW9 used on current route diagrams and announcements.

Location and connections

Situated near Aljunied Road and adjacent residential and commercial streets, the station provides convenient pedestrian access to local shops, schools, places of worship and community facilities. Surface bus services and short walking routes link surrounding neighbourhoods to the station, making it a common entry point for local journeys and transfers to the wider rail network.
