Overview
The Citroën Xsara was introduced by Citroën in 1997 and remained in production until 2005. Positioned as a compact family car, it was designed to offer comfortable ride quality, practical interior space and a range of economical petrol and diesel engines suitable for everyday use. A multi-purpose-vehicle derivative, the Xsara Picasso, was launched in 1999 and continued in production through 2010, broadening the Xsara nameplate's appeal to families.
Design and engineering
The Xsara shared its basic platform and many mechanical components with other models from the PSA group, notably the Peugeot 306. This platform sharing reduced development costs and simplified servicing across related models. The car emphasized a comfortable suspension setup, roomy cabin for its class and straightforward ergonomics typical of late-1990s small family cars.
Body styles and equipment
The model range included three- and five-door hatchbacks, an estate (station wagon) and a coupé variant that offered a sportier appearance. Trim levels varied from basic, budget-oriented versions to better equipped variants with features such as multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes and air conditioning as optional or standard depending on market and year.
Xsara Picasso
The Xsara Picasso MPV prioritized interior flexibility, tall seating position and practical storage solutions. It appealed to buyers seeking compact external dimensions combined with family-friendly cabin space. The Picasso name became closely associated with the Xsara family during its extended production run.
Motorsport and legacy
Beyond everyday use, a rally-prepared Xsara gained recognition in international competition, contributing to Citroën's motorsport reputation in the early 2000s. In private ownership the Xsara is remembered for its comfortable ride and practicality; over time owners commonly reported age-related issues such as suspension wear and corrosion on older examples, as is typical for vehicles of the period. The model was eventually succeeded in Citroën's line-up by later compact models as the company updated its range.
