Chōkyū (Japanese era, 1040–1044)

Chōkyū (長久) was a Japanese era name from November 1040 to November 1044 during the reign of Emperor Go-Suzaku. It sits between Chōryaku and Kantoku in the Heian period nengō sequence.

Chōkyū (長久), translated roughly as "long-lasting," is the Japanese era name (nengō) that covered the years from November 1040 through November 1044. The era coincided with the reign of Emperor Go-Suzaku and forms part of the mid-Heian period chronology. Era names were used to mark years in official records, legal documents, chronicles and court diaries.

Context and naming

The nengō system in Japan, borrowed from China and adopted in the 7th century, assigns a name to a span of years for dating and symbolic purposes. Names were changed for a variety of reasons: to mark auspicious beginnings, respond to natural disasters, or reflect political decisions. Chōkyū followed the Chōryaku era and preceded Kantoku, and is described in historical records using the characters 長久.

Political and cultural setting

During Chōkyū the imperial court at Heian-kyō (modern Kyoto) continued the patterns of Heian court life: ceremonial observances, literary activity, and aristocratic governance. Real political power often rested with powerful regents from the Fujiwara clan; this period falls within the long era of Fujiwara influence over court appointments and administration.

Significance and records

Contemporary sources that refer to Chōkyū include court diaries, official rosters and later historical chronicles. Such documents provide information about ceremonies, provincial reports and occasional natural events that prompted era-name changes. Modern historians use era names like Chōkyū when converting premodern Japanese dates into the Gregorian calendar.
