Overview
Cherry County is a sparsely populated county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. The county seat and largest town is Valentine, a small community that serves as a local center for services, tourism, and ranching supply.
Geography and environment
Cherry County occupies the largest land area of any county in Nebraska and is dominated by the Sandhills, a vast expanse of grass-covered sand dunes underlain by a shallow, porous aquifer. The landscape supports mixed-grass prairie, wet meadows, and several river corridors, including portions of the Niobrara River and other streams that cut through the dunes. This pattern creates a mosaic of habitats important for wildlife and cattle grazing.
History and name
The county was organized in 1883 and developed as part of the westward expansion of ranching and settlement. It is commonly reported to have been named for Lieutenant Samuel A. Cherry, a cavalry officer associated with the region in the late 19th century. Settlement remained limited compared with agricultural counties on richer soils, leaving large ranches and open range.
Economy, population and communities
Ranching and cattle production are the dominant economic activities, supported by haying and limited dryland farming where soils allow. Low population density and large landholdings characterize the county; most residents live in small towns, unincorporated communities, or on ranches. Local institutions in Valentine and other towns provide schools, healthcare, and markets for agricultural goods.
Recreation, conservation and notable features
Cherry County is valued for outdoor recreation and conservation. Public and private lands offer hunting, birdwatching, fishing, and river recreation. Nearby natural attractions and protected areas—refuges, scenic river corridors, and waterfalls—draw visitors interested in the Sandhills ecosystem. The county’s combination of open space, wildlife habitat, and ranching heritage makes it notable within Nebraska.
