Aklan (Philippine province)

Geography and administration

Aklan occupies part of northern Panay and has a varied coastline along the Sibuyan and Visayan Seas. Terrain includes river valleys such as the Aklan River basin, forested uplands, and beaches. Administratively it is divided into several municipalities and one component city-equivalent; the best-known municipalities are Kalibo (the provincial center) and Malay (which governs Boracay).

Language, culture and festivals

Local languages include Aklanon (also called Akeanon), Hiligaynon and Filipino. The province is celebrated for the Ati‑Atihan festival in Kalibo, a week-long religious and cultural event featuring street parades, music and traditional costumes held in January. Crafts, ritual dances and local cuisine reflect a mixture of indigenous and Spanish-influenced traditions.

Economy and tourism

The economy blends agriculture (rice, coconut, fishing), small-scale manufacturing and a growing service sector driven by tourism. Boracay brought international visitors and investment; after a period of environmental rehabilitation it reopened with measures intended to balance tourism and ecological protection. Aklan also attracts visitors for cultural tourism, birding and scenic coastlines.

Historical notes and distinctions

Historically Aklan was part of the Spanish and later American administrative divisions on Panay; it was reconstituted as a separate province in the mid-20th century. Notable distinctions include its distinct Aklanon language and the Ati‑Atihan festival, both central to provincial identity.
