The Central Hockey League (CHL) was a mid-level professional ice hockey league based in the United States. Established in 1992, it provided a competitive, regional level of professional play beneath the top North American leagues. The CHL operated with a regular season followed by postseason play to determine a league champion and served as a destination for players, coaches and staff building careers in the sport. According to contemporary records, it was owned by Global Entertainment Corporation during part of its existence.

Organization and season structure

Teams in the CHL typically represented mid-sized cities or regions and played schedules concentrated on regional travel to manage costs. The league's structure commonly included:

  • a regular season with a points system to rank clubs;
  • a multi-round playoff to decide the champion;
  • affiliations or informal relationships with higher-level clubs that aided player movement.

History and development

Over its history, the CHL expanded and contracted as franchises entered and left, reflecting the economics of minor professional sports. It provided opportunities for players who were not yet in, or who moved between, higher-tier leagues. In 2014 the CHL ceased independent operations when the majority of its remaining franchises joined the ECHL, integrating many clubs into a larger nationwide minor-league structure.

Role and legacy

The CHL helped sustain professional hockey in communities that lacked National Hockey League or American Hockey League presence, offering fans access to live hockey and supporting local sports economies. Many players used the CHL as a stepping stone to reach higher levels; teams often remained important local institutions even after league changes.
