Overview

Carlo Fonseka (Sinhala: කාලෝ ෆොන්සේකා; 4 March 1933 – 2 September 2019) was a Sri Lankan physician, academic and political activist. Born in Colombo when the island was known as Ceylon, he became a prominent figure in medical education and public debate on health and science in Sri Lanka.

Career and roles

Fonseka trained and worked as a medical doctor before moving into teaching and administration. He served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Kelaniya, where he was involved in shaping medical curricula and mentoring students. Later in his career he was appointed president of the Sri Lanka Medical Council, a role he held from 2012 to 2017, giving him influence over professional standards and medical regulation in the country.

Public engagement and activism

Beyond clinical work and university duties, Fonseka was known as a public intellectual who commented frequently on matters of public health, medical ethics and science policy. He combined medical expertise with activism, taking public positions on health-system reform and the importance of evidence-based practice.
