Wise County is an administrative county division in the United States, located in the Appalachian region of southwestern Virginia. The county recorded a population of 41,452 in the 2010 census. The county seat is the town of Wise, which serves as the center for local government and regional services; the formal location of those offices is often referred to as the county seat.

Geography and environment

Wise County's landscape is characterized by rugged hills, forested ridges and narrow valleys typical of the southern Appalachians. These landforms have influenced settlement patterns, transportation routes and land use.
