Overview

Wilhelmus Lourens Johannes "Wim" Suurbier (16 January 1945 – 12 July 2020) was a Dutch professional footballer best known for his time as a right back with AFC Ajax and for his appearances with the Netherlands national team. He combined defensive duties with a pronounced attacking instinct and became widely recognised during the 1970s as a model of the modern full back. As a player he featured prominently in Ajax's domestic and continental successes and represented his country at major international tournaments. Later in life he worked in coaching, including a spell as an assistant coach with the Albania national team; see more on his coaching roles here.

Club and international career

Suurbier spent the prime of his club career at AFC Ajax, where he was a regular member of a side that dominated Dutch football and made a major impact in European competition in the early 1970s. He played in an Ajax side associated with the "Total Football" concept and contributed to the team’s domestic championships and multiple European Cup victories. On the international stage he was part of the Netherlands squad that reached the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup, providing width and reliable defensive cover while also supporting attacks from the right flank. Style of play

Suurbier was known for an energetic, forward-minded approach to full back play. Key characteristics included:

  • Pace: ability to make long overlapping runs up the touchline;
  • Stamina: consistent work-rate over 90 minutes, covering large distances;
  • Crossing: delivery from wide positions to create chances for forwards;
  • Defensive reliability: capable in one-on-one situations and positional play.

These attributes suited the tactical demands of Ajax and the national side, which prized mobility, positional interchange and technical skill across all positions.

Later career and legacy

After his years at Ajax Suurbier continued to play and later transitioned into coaching roles in Europe and abroad. He was respected within football circles for his professionalism and for helping to define the attacking full back role that became common in subsequent decades. His influence is often noted when discussing the evolution of defensive players who contribute directly to offense. Additional career notes and post-playing roles can be found here and here.

Suurbier’s death in 2020 prompted widespread tribute from former teammates, clubs and supporters who remembered him as a key figure in one of Ajax’s most celebrated eras and as an important member of the Dutch national team during a transformative period in world football.
