Washington County, Pennsylvania: overview, history, economy and communities

History

Formed in the late 18th century and named for George Washington, the county played a visible role in the early republic. It was a focal point of rural resistance during the Whiskey Rebellion in the 1790s and later developed through waves of industrialization. Local history reflects patterns common to western Pennsylvania: settlement, extractive industries, and 19th–20th century manufacturing growth.
