Salvador Alejandro Jorge del Solar Labarthe (born 1 May 1970) is a Peruvian actor, lawyer and public official who moved from a career in the performing arts into national politics. Widely known in Peru for his work in film, television and theatre, he later held senior government posts, combining a background in law with a public profile that helped bring attention to cultural policy and institutional reform.
Early life and professional background
Del Solar trained as a lawyer and subsequently pursued a successful career as an actor and director. Over several years he appeared in a range of Peruvian and international productions, earning recognition for dramatic roles and for contributions to contemporary Peruvian cinema and theatre. His public visibility as an artist preceded his entry into government service, where he applied his experience in culture and communication to policy roles.
Political career and offices held
Del Solar served as Minister of Culture from 5 December 2016 to 27 December 2017 in the administration of President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. In that role he focused on cultural promotion, heritage issues and strengthening institutional support for the arts. He later returned to public office when President Martín Vizcarra appointed him Prime Minister on 11 March 2019. As head of the cabinet he was responsible for coordinating government policy during a period of heightened tensions with the legislative branch. Del Solar resigned on 30 September 2019 amid a constitutional and political confrontation between the executive and the Congress that culminated shortly afterward in the dissolution of Congress.
Roles and significance
Del Solar's profile is notable for the uncommon transition from a cultural public figure to a senior policymaker. Advocates praised his emphasis on cultural institutions and transparency, while commentators highlighted the challenges he faced reconciling political reform efforts with a fragmented partisan landscape.
