Overview

Roanoke County is a county in the U.S. state of Virginia. According to the 2020 census the county population was 96,929. The county's traditional county seat is the independent city of Salem, which is surrounded by the county but is administratively separate under Virginia law.

Geography and communities

Located in the Roanoke Valley at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the county includes a mix of suburban neighborhoods, small towns, and rural farmland. It lies adjacent to the City of Roanoke and is part of the larger Roanoke metropolitan area. Local communities offer residential developments, commercial corridors, and pockets of preserved natural land.

History and development

The area was settled over several centuries and developed more rapidly in the 19th and early 20th centuries with transportation links and industry shaping growth. Roanoke County was formed from earlier, larger jurisdictions in the 1800s and later evolved as nearby towns and the city of Roanoke expanded. That history is reflected in local architecture, towns, and historic sites.

Economy, infrastructure, and services

The county economy is diverse, combining light manufacturing, health care, education, retail, and small business. Many residents commute into the City of Roanoke for work. The region is served by regional highways and the Roanoke–Blacksburg airport, and county government provides schools, public safety, and planning for suburban and rural areas.

Recreation and notable places

Outdoor recreation is a strong feature: hiking, mountain biking, fishing and scenic drives into the Blue Ridge are popular. Parks, trails, and reservoirs provide green space near population centers. Local cultural offerings and events are often coordinated with neighboring Roanoke city institutions and regional festivals.
