Overview
McMinn County is a county in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. The county seat and largest city is Athens. According to the 2010 U.S. census, the county population was 52,266. McMinn County sits where the Ridge-and-Valley province of the Appalachian region gives way to lower elevations, a geography that has influenced settlement, land use and transportation routes.
History and name
McMinn County was organized in the early 19th century and was named for Joseph McMinn, who served as governor of Tennessee. Like many counties in the region, its early economy centered on small-scale farming, local trade and crafts. Over the decades the county developed pockets of industry and expanded its road and rail connections to serve the nearby cities and markets of eastern Tennessee.
Geography and communities
The county includes the city of Athens and several smaller towns and unincorporated communities. Major highways and regional roads pass through the area, linking residents to neighboring counties and to larger transportation corridors. The mix of valleys and ridges created by the Appalachian foothills shapes where farms, neighborhoods and industrial sites are located.
Economy, government and services
McMinn County's economy is a blend of agriculture, manufacturing, retail services and public employment. Local government provides typical county services including courts, public works and law enforcement. Public education is administered by the McMinn County School District, which operates elementary, middle and high schools serving the county's students.
Notable facts and recent issues
As with many communities, McMinn County has seen debates about education, public policy and community standards. In January a local school board decision to remove a widely discussed graphic novel from classroom instruction drew national attention and public discussion about curriculum, age-appropriateness, and the role of schools in teaching difficult historical subjects.
