Martin Edward Dempsey (born March 14, 1952), often called Marty Dempsey, is a retired four-star general of the United States Army. He served as the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 1, 2011, to September 25, 2015. Before that, he was the 37th Chief of Staff of the Army for a brief period in 2011. Dempsey is a recipient of foreign and domestic honors, including an honorary KBE, and is known for his focus on joint operations and military readiness.

Military career and responsibilities

Dempsey graduated from the United States Military Academy and spent more than four decades on active duty. As Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, he was the highest-ranking military officer in the United States and the principal military advisor to the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council.
