Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state Tennessee and is commonly considered part of East Tennessee. The county seat is Jasper, and at the 2010 census the population was recorded as 28,237 (2010 census). The county takes its name from Revolutionary War figure Francis Marion and combines rural landscapes with small towns and industrial sites.

Geography and natural features

Marion County sits where plateaus and river valleys meet, with the Tennessee River and associated reservoirs forming a defining feature. The county includes portions of Lookout Mountain and the Sequatchie Valley, creating steep ridges, caves and scenic overlooks. The Tennessee Valley Authority developed dams and lakes that shaped modern waterways and recreational areas.

History and development

The area developed in the early 19th century as settlement moved westward across the Appalachians. Transportation improvements, river navigation and later highway links encouraged small industries and agriculture. Towns grew around mineral resources, rail connections and river access, while many communities retained a rural character.

Economy and population

Marion County's economy combines manufacturing, farming, retail services and a growing tourism sector built on outdoor recreation. Population trends have fluctuated with employment shifts; communities are served by local school systems, healthcare providers and small businesses. Regional hubs provide additional jobs and services for residents.

Recreation and points of interest

Outdoor pursuits are prominent: boating, fishing and paddling on reservoirs and the Tennessee River; hiking and sightseeing on Lookout Mountain; and cave exploration at features such as Nickajack Cave. Historic small towns and seasonal events draw visitors, and local parks support camping and picnicking.

Government, transportation and services

The county government operates from Jasper and provides standard local services including public safety, road maintenance and land planning. Marion County is served by state and federal highways and local roads connecting to larger metropolitan areas.
