Overview
Marcus Krüger (born 27 May 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden) is a professional ice hockey forward who established himself in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a defensively reliable center. He is best known for his two-way responsibilities, strong penalty killing and faceoff work while wearing the uniform of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Playing profile and characteristics
Krüger is characterized as a defensive-minded center with an emphasis on positioning, anticipation and team defense rather than high scoring totals. He often took on checking-line assignments and key minutes on the penalty kill. His skill set made him valuable in match-up situations where physical play, quick reads and effective puck retrieval were required.
Club career
Krüger came through the Swedish club system with Djurgårdens IF, competing in what was then commonly referred to as the Elitserien (SEL) before the league was rebranded as the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). After several seasons in Stockholm he attracted NHL attention and was selected in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, 149th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. He signed his first NHL contract in 2010 but remained in Sweden for the opening year of the deal; the Blackhawks recalled him to North America late in the 2010–11 season.
NHL highlights
Krüger scored his first NHL goal on 29 October 2011 in a 5–2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. During his time with Chicago he was part of the team's supporting core, contributing primarily in defensive roles. He was a member of the Blackhawks roster that won the Stanley Cup in 2013 after defeating the Boston Bruins four games to two in the Stanley Cup Finals.
International play and reputation
Krüger has represented Sweden at international tournaments at various age levels, adding to his experience against different styles of hockey. His reputation in club play centers on reliability in defensive situations and the ability to neutralize opponents’ top forwards, qualities that coaches value even when a player is not a major offensive contributor.
