Overview
Khadija Arib (born 10 October 1960) is a Dutch politician affiliated with the Labour Party (PvdA). Born near Casablanca in Morocco, she moved to the Netherlands as a teenager and later studied sociology at the University of Amsterdam. Arib became a nationally prominent parliamentarian from the late 1990s and served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2016 until 2021.

Early life and education

Arib grew up in a Moroccan environment and emigrated to the Netherlands at about age 15. Her academic background in sociology prepared her for work in public affairs and political life. Her experience as an immigrant and student in the Netherlands has been a persistent reference in her public work and public statements on integration, equality and civic participation.

Parliamentary career

Arib was first elected to the Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives) in 1998. She has served multiple terms with a short interruption in 2006–2007, returning thereafter to continue her legislative work. During her time in parliament she became known as an experienced chair and parliamentarian with interests shaped by social issues and the concerns of diverse communities in the Netherlands.

Role as Speaker

From 2016 to 2021 Arib held the office of Speaker of the House of Representatives. In that capacity she presided over plenary debates, enforced procedural rules, represented the House externally and oversaw elements of its internal administration. The Speaker’s role is both procedural and symbolic: it requires impartiality in managing debates while representing the House in relations with the monarch, government and public.

Significance and public image

Khadija Arib is widely recognised as one of the better-known Dutch politicians of Moroccan descent and as a prominent Muslim voice in national politics. Her career is often cited in discussions about representation, integration and the changing face of Dutch political institutions. After stepping down as Speaker in 2021 she continued to be an influential figure within her party and among politicians who highlight diversity and social policy.
