Overview
Edward John "Johnnie" Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, MVO (24 January 1924 – 29 March 1992) was a British hereditary peer best known as the head of the Spencer family in the late 20th century and as the father of Diana, Princess of Wales. Styled Viscount Althorp until he succeeded to the earldom in June 1975, he combined the duties of a landed aristocrat with private family life and public responsibilities associated with a hereditary title.
Title, honours and family seat
As Earl Spencer he held one of the historic peerages in the United Kingdom and bore the family’s traditional connection to Althorp, the Spencer family's ancestral estate in Northamptonshire. He was a member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO), an honour reflecting personal service to the monarchy. The earldom and the Althorp estate have been associated with the family for several generations and remain an identifying element of the Spencer lineage.
Personal life and family
Born in Bayswater, London, he was the son of Albert Spencer and Lady Cynthia Hamilton. He married Frances Roche; the marriage produced five children and ended in separation. The couple's third daughter, who attracted global attention, was Diana, Princess of Wales. In 1976 he remarried Raine, Countess of Dartmouth. His descendants include grandchildren who are prominent in the British royal context, among them Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, through his daughter Diana.
Roles and public significance
Although not an internationally prominent public figure in his own right, the 8th Earl Spencer represented the continuity of an aristocratic household and the custodianship of an historic family estate. As a hereditary peer he held the traditional rights and responsibilities that attended the title, including participation in certain civic and social functions. His family ties later placed the Spencer family in the international spotlight after his daughter’s marriage into the British royal family.
Marriages and children

- Second marriage: to Raine, Countess of Dartmouth, in 1976.
Death and legacy
The 8th Earl Spencer died on 29 March 1992 at Wellington Hospital in London of a heart attack at the age of 68. His death marked a transition in the stewardship of the Spencer family's estates and a moment of reflection on the family's public role following the global attention paid to his daughter. The earldom passed to the next male heir according to the terms of the peerage, and Althorp continued as the family's principal residence and a focal point for their historic identity. For contemporary readers, the 8th Earl is often remembered primarily through his connection to Diana and the subsequent public lives of his grandchildren.
