Overview
Joan Roberts (July 15, 1917 – August 13, 2012) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned theatre, film and television. She is most widely remembered for creating the role of Laurey in the original Broadway production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!, a landmark musical that helped define modern American musical theatre.
Early life and beginnings
Roberts was born in New York City and launched her performing career in the years leading up to World War II. Trained as a singer and actress, she moved into professional theatre at a time when Broadway was becoming a vital cultural force in the United States. Her early stage work prepared her for the high-profile opportunity that came with Oklahoma! and helped establish her reputation as a soprano with a naturalistic acting style.
Stage career and notable roles
Roberts's signature accomplishment was originating Laurey, the heroine of Oklahoma!, in the 1940s Broadway production. That part placed her at the center of one of the twentieth century's most influential musicals and associated her name permanently with the role. Beyond that breakthrough she returned to live theatre for regional productions, revivals and concert appearances for many years.
