Overview

Jake LaTurner (born February 17, 1988) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party. He has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since taking office in 2021 as the representative for Kansas's 2nd congressional district. Before his election to Congress he held statewide office in Kansas and served in the state legislature.

Early political career

LaTurner's political career began in the Kansas State Senate, where he served from 2013 until 2017. During his time in the legislature he gained experience on state policy issues and built a profile that led to his selection for a statewide executive post. His trajectory from state senator to statewide official and then to federal office reflects a common path in American politics from local or state-level service to national office.

State treasurer

In 2017 LaTurner became Kansas State Treasurer after being appointed to fill a vacancy, and he subsequently won election to the office in 2018. As state treasurer, he was responsible for managing state funds, overseeing investments, administering unclaimed property programs and reporting on financial health and cash flow for state government. When he assumed the treasurer's office he was widely noted as one of the youngest statewide officials in the country, a distinction that drew attention to generational change in state leadership.

Run for Congress and later campaigns

LaTurner briefly explored a campaign for the U.S. Senate in the 2020 cycle but quickly withdrew from that race and instead ran for the U.S. House. In the Republican primary for the 2nd district he unseated incumbent Steve Watkins, who had attracted controversy during his tenure. News coverage of the primary noted the upset and the role of intra-party dynamics. LaTurner went on to win the general election and began representing his district in Washington, D.C., in January 2021.

Notable facts and responsibilities

  • Young statewide official: LaTurner was one of the youngest people serving in a statewide elected role in the United States while treasurer.
  • Fiscal responsibilities: As treasurer he handled state cash management, investments and unclaimed property programs; as a member of Congress he participates in federal budget and oversight debates.
  • Electoral history: He rose from state senate to an appointed and then elected statewide office, and later to the U.S. House.

Context and significance

LaTurner's career illustrates a path from state to federal service and highlights how appointments and special elections can accelerate political advancement. His primary victory over an incumbent drew attention both for the internal Republican contest and for the larger question of how allegations, performance and party organization affect re-nomination. Observers and constituents watch his committee work and voting record to evaluate his priorities for the district he represents in Congress.
