Overview

John Warren "Jack" Bergman (born February 2, 1947) is a retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant general who has served as the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 1st congressional district since 2017. A career military officer turned lawmaker, Bergman is widely noted for being the highest-ranking military officer ever elected to the U.S. Congress. His public profile combines a lengthy record of service, an aviation background, and congressional attention to defense, veterans' issues and rural concerns.

Military career and aviation

Bergman spent several decades in the Marine Corps, rising through operational and command billets to become the commanding general of Marine Forces Reserve and Marine Forces North. During his military career he served as a naval aviator, flying a range of rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft, including the CH-46 Sea Knight and UH-1 Huey helicopters, as well as fixed-wing types such as the T-28 and the KC-130 transport. His experience combined operational flight time, unit leadership and senior staff responsibilities, which shaped his interest in national security and military readiness.

Political career

Running as a Republican, Bergman won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and took office the following year. He represents Michigan's 1st congressional district, a large and predominantly rural district that includes the entire Upper Peninsula and parts of the northern Lower Peninsula. In Congress he has emphasized strengthening the armed forces, improving care for veterans, supporting small businesses and addressing infrastructure needs in remote and rural communities.

Notable events and public profile

In June 2017 Bergman was among the lawmakers practicing on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia when an attack on the group left several people wounded. The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, shot multiple participants, including Representative Steve Scalise (R–LA). Bergman has spoken about the experience and its effect on members of Congress. Positions and priorities

Bergman describes himself as conservative and places strong emphasis on national defense, veterans' medical care and local economic development. He often frames policy through the lens of his military service, advocating for readiness, modernization and support for service members transitioning to civilian life. While affiliated with the Republican Party, he has at times characterized his views as practical and focused on constituent needs rather than strict partisan identity.

As a three-star lieutenant general elected to Congress, Bergman holds a unique place in modern American political history: he is the highest-ranking military officer ever to serve in the U.S. legislature, a distinction noted by observers and historians of civil–military relations.
