Overview

Giles County is a rural county in the Appalachian region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Located in the southwestern part of the state, the county is centered on the New River valley and small mountain communities. According to the 2010 census, 17,286 people lived in the county; its administrative center is Pearisburg, designated as the county seat.

Geography and natural features

The county’s landscape is typical of the southern Appalachians, with forested ridges, narrow valleys and river corridors. The New River, one of North America’s oldest rivers, travels through parts of the county and supports fishing and boating. Formed in the early 19th century, Giles County was named for William Branch Giles, a prominent Virginia politician. The county includes several incorporated towns and numerous unincorporated communities. In addition to Pearisburg, other notable towns include Narrows and small river communities.
