Emile Gerardus Maria Roemer (born 24 August 1962 in Boxmeer) is a Dutch politician affiliated with the Socialist Party (SP). He is best known for serving as SP parliamentary and political leader from 5 March 2010 until 13 December 2017 and for his long career moving between local, national and provincial government posts.
Early career and local politics
Roemer began his public life in local government. Before entering national politics he worked as a school teacher and served on municipal bodies in Boxmeer, including a period as an alderman. These early roles established his reputation for grassroots engagement and practical problem‑solving in municipal administration. See local profile: alderman.
National parliament and party leadership
Roemer was a member of the Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives) from 2006 to 2018. During his tenure he was the visible face of the SP in several national campaigns, leading the party through parliamentary debates and elections. In 2017 he stepped down as party leader and was succeeded by Lilian Marijnissen.
Acting mayor and provincial office
After leaving the House he served as acting mayor of Heerlen (2018–2020) and later of Alkmaar (2020–2021). On 1 December 2021 he was appointed King's Commissioner of Limburg, the senior representative of the national government in the province and the chair of the provincial executive and council.
Roles, responsibilities and public image
Throughout his career Roemer has been associated with pragmatic left‑wing politics, a focus on social welfare and attention to local concerns. His background as a teacher and municipal official shaped a style often described as direct and accessible. As King's Commissioner he fulfills ceremonial duties, coordinates provincial policy, and acts as a liaison between national and local authorities.
