Geography and environment

East Java has a long coastline facing the Java Sea and the Indian Ocean and includes Madura Island, which lies off the northern coast of Java. The province has a single land boundary to the west with Central Java. Its landscape includes fertile lowlands, rugged volcanic ranges and coastal wetlands.

History and culture

The region played an important role in classical Indonesian history: nearby sites are associated with the Majapahit kingdom and other premodern polities. East Javanese culture blends Javanese traditions with distinctive local customs and the languages spoken include Javanese dialects, Madurese and Indonesian.

Economy and transport

Industry, agriculture and maritime trade are central to the province's economy. Surabaya hosts major seaports and manufacturing, while rural areas grow rice, sugar, tobacco and other crops. Transport links include busy highways, regional rail, airports and the Suramadu Bridge connecting Java to Madura.
