Clyde Anderson Tolson (May 22, 1900 – April 14, 1975) was the second-ranking official of the FBI from 1930 until 1972. He is best known as the protégé and long time top deputy of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. He was Acting Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for one day in May 1972.
