Boxing gloves: design, types, history and uses

Protective padded gloves worn in boxing and related sports; their construction, weights, types, history, and how they differ from bare-knuckle fighting.

Boxing gloves are padded hand coverings worn by fighters to protect the hands and reduce facial cuts during punches. Modern gloves are the standard equipment in most boxing contests and many striking arts. They alter how force is delivered compared with ungloved strikes and are available in a range of styles and weights to suit competition, training, or bag work. For general information about their use in the sport, see how boxers wear gloves.

Construction and characteristics

Typical gloves combine a leather or synthetic outer shell with foam padding and an inner lining. Padding density and placement differ by purpose: knuckle areas receive the most cushioning while the wrist area is reinforced to support joints. Gloves come with lace-up closures for a tighter fit or Velcro straps for convenience. Many designs attach the thumb to the main body to reduce thumb injuries and accidental eye gouging.

Types and common weights

  • Competition gloves: Lighter, with less padding to allow more speed; professional bouts often use 8–10 ounce gloves for many weight classes.
  • Sparring gloves: Heavier (often 14–16 ounces) to protect training partners and the striker’s hands during practice.
  • Training and bag gloves: Designed for impact on heavy bags and mitt work, available in varied padding and wrist support.
  • Amateur and youth gloves: Sized and padded to meet amateur rules and safety considerations.

Weight labels are measured in ounces and influence both protective capacity and how punches feel; heavier gloves slow hand speed but increase cushioning.

History and development

Padded gloves evolved from earlier hand coverings used for training and exhibition. In the 18th century, practitioners introduced soft "mufflers" for practice; over the 19th and 20th centuries regulations formalized glove specifications for competition to balance safety and sporting fairness. Changes in glove design have affected tactics, defensive techniques and the sport’s regulation of head injuries.

Uses, advantages and distinctions

Gloves protect the small bones of the hands, reduce superficial facial cuts, and change the dynamics of striking compared with bare-knuckle boxing. They are used in professional and amateur boxing, many kickboxing rulesets, and in training for other combat sports. Notable distinctions include differences from open-fingered MMA gloves and from historical gauntlets: boxing gloves prioritize knuckle padding and wrist support rather than finger mobility.

When choosing gloves, consider purpose (competition vs. sparring), appropriate weight for body size and intended use, closure type, and material quality. Properly fitted gloves and hand wraps together offer the best protection for both wearer and opponent.
