History and development

Boussu's older origins are typical of the region: a settlement with medieval roots that experienced significant change during the Industrial Revolution. Coal mining, metallurgy and textile-related industries expanded nearby, producing the large planned industrial and residential complexes that gave Hornu and Boussu much of their 19th-century character.

Present-day importance and distinctions

Today Boussu is valued for its preserved industrial architecture and as a local service centre within Hainaut. It attracts visitors interested in industrial heritage and adaptive reuse of historic factories. The municipality is also connected administratively and economically to the wider province of Hainaut and regional initiatives in Wallonia (Hainaut province).
