The 2017–18 UEFA Champions League group stage took place between 12 September and 6 December 2017. Thirty-two clubs were drawn into eight groups of four and played a double round‑robin (home and away) across six matchdays. The group stage determined the 16 teams advancing to the knockout phase of the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League and sent the eight third‑placed teams into the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

Format and draw

Teams were seeded into four pots prior to the draw: Pot 1 contained the title holders and the domestic champions of the highest‑ranked associations, while Pots 2–4 were filled according to the UEFA club coefficient rankings. The draw, held in Monaco in late August 2017, produced eight balanced groups with measures to prevent clubs from the same national association meeting in the same group.

Competition schedule and progression

Each team played six matches (three home, three away) across six matchdays in September–December. Wins earned three points and draws one. Group winners and runners‑up advanced to the round of 16; third‑placed teams continued in European competition by entering the Europa League knockout phase; fourth place teams were eliminated from continental play for that season.

Tie‑breaking and rankings

When clubs finished level on points, UEFA’s regulations applied sequential tie‑breakers beginning with head‑to‑head results (points, goal difference, goals scored, away goals), reapplying head‑to‑head criteria if a subset of teams remained tied, then overall goal difference and goals scored, followed by disciplinary points and club coefficients if necessary. This order meant direct encounters were prioritized over aggregate season statistics.

The group stage combined sporting importance with commercial value: it sets the bracket for the knockout rounds, provides high‑profile fixtures for broadcasters and sponsors, and allows clubs to secure substantial UEFA prize money and coefficient points.
