Yukio Edano (born 31 May 1964) is a Japanese politician and long‑time member of the House of Representatives in the National Diet. He has served in senior cabinet posts within administrations associated with the Democratic Party of Japan and later became the founding leader of the centre‑left Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.

Edano has held several high‑profile government roles. He was a senior cabinet official during the DPJ era and served as the government's principal spokesperson during national emergencies. Leadership of the Constitutional Democratic Party

Role during the 2011 disaster

Edano was widely visible nationally during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, tsunami and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. Acting as the government's chief communicator at that time, he conducted frequent press briefings and became a recognizable public face in efforts to coordinate responses and explain government actions to the public.
